CastleGuessr is a free geography game built on the Castlemap atlas. Each round shows one photograph of a castle, fortress, palace or ruin and its name — no country, no place names on the board. The only question is where on Earth it stands, and one tap on the world map is your answer.
The castles are drawn from the 500 best known in the atlas of 7,785, so every round gives you a fair chance of recognising it: Neuschwanstein, the Alhambra, Himeji, the Forbidden City. The reveal names the castle, draws a line from your tap to where it really stands and links its page, so you can read the story you were just guessing at. Play as many rounds as you like — there is no limit — and your rounds, your average and your best stay on your own device.
A tap within 25 km takes the full 5,000 points — a castle is a point on the map, not a country, and 25 km forgives a fat finger without forgiving the wrong city. Beyond that the score falls away smoothly with distance: miss by 1,000 km and you still take about 2,570, put your pin on the far side of the world and you take almost nothing. The board carries no city names on purpose, because a map that prints “Osaka” answers the question for you.
