The castle of La Aragonesa is located in the area of La Aragonesa, near the village of San Julián and close to the provincial boundary between Córdoba and Jaén.

During the Islamic period, Marmolejo must have been a small hamlet or farmstead, since it is barely mentioned in the chronicles until the year 1311, when it appears mentioned as a parish. It had a small castle, in which the hermitage of San Lorenzo stood. Of this castle all that is known is that in the 15th century it was in dispute between the Marquis of Villena and the Constable Miguel Lucas de Iranzo.

The best-preserved medieval settlement in its territory is the castle of La Aragonesa, of Islamic origin, which after the conquest was used and transformed into a palatial residence.

It is under the protection of the generic Declaration of the Decree of 22 April 1949 and Law 16/1985 on Spanish Historical Heritage. In 1993 the Junta de Andalucía granted special recognition to the castles of the autonomous community of Andalusia.

It is currently in private hands, and its condition shows serious damage to its structure, which raises fears for its conservation. Proof of this is the concern shown both by the neighbouring town council of Villa del Río and by the Fuente Agria Association for the Defence of Heritage, of Marmolejo.
