Castle of Máré
🇭🇺 Hungary
The Castle of Máré (Máré-vár, Máré vára) is a smaller fortification in the northern part of the eastern Mecsek, on a steep, wooded hilltop, which fell into ruin centuries ago. The few castle walls remaining today form a closed courtyard. The castle ruin, lying south of Magyaregregy, is a popular tourist destination and excursion site, where exhibitions and tradition-keeping programmes are held.
Those arriving by vehicle can reach it from road 6541 between Pécs-Hird and Szászvár, from which one must turn off at a junction (Várvölgy bus stop) on the Magyaregregy–Zobákpuszta section. The junction is about 900 metres from the southernmost houses of Magyaregregy, where a campsite and open-air bath also await visitors. From the junction one must travel about a further 2 km east to the castle ruin, hidden in the dense forest at a height of 340 metres.
