Fort São Joaquim do Rio Branco

Fort São Joaquim do Rio Branco (in Portuguese: Forte de São Joaquim do Rio Branco, literally Fort of Saint Joachim of the Rio Branco) was a structure situated in the state of Roraima, in the far north of the South American country of Brazil.

It was raised on the left bank of the confluence of the upper Rio Branco (today the Uraricoera river) with the Tacutu river, where the Rio Branco is formed, about 32 kilometres north of the present-day capital of the Brazilian state of Roraima, the city of Boa Vista.

Between 1775 and 1776 construction of Fort São Joaquim was finally begun, strategically commanding the point where the Rio Branco is formed and access to the Tacutu and Uraricoera rivers, in the face of threats of a Spanish or Dutch invasion by that route.

Its collapsed ruins have been listed as Historic Heritage since 22 April 2001.
