Landesfürstliche Burg
🇮🇹 Italy
The Landesfürstliche Burg is a group of buildings erected around 1470 by Duke Sigmund of Austria-Tyrol, situated in the middle of the town of Merano (Burggrafenamt, South Tyrol), which served him as a town residence. Emperor Maximilian was a guest here several times.
The group of buildings resembles an artfully designed fortified house with a weak enclosure more than a fully developed castle complex. Some specialist authors of castle research even rate the complex merely as an early manor house, although the princely castle was the town seat of the high-noble Tyrolean territorial lord, of his local district and town judge, and of the so-called cellarage office with the "cellarer at Merano" (administrator, tax collector). Some of the interior rooms are decorated with frescoes dating back to the time of Duke Sigmund and his first wife Eleanor of Scotland. In the 16th century the original building was remodelled. Inside there are high-quality wood-panelled parlours and the late medieval furnishings. Some weapons such as lances and halberds have also been preserved or were brought together.
The demolition of the castle planned in the late 19th century was successfully prevented by David von Schönherr thanks to a broadly based initiative. The building, which was in need of restoration, was redesigned in a historicist manner by the cathedral architect Friedrich von Schmidt.
Today the Landesfürstliche Burg museum is owned by the municipality of Merano and open to the public. It is also used for civil weddings.
