Rychnov Castle
🇨🇿 Czech Republic · 17th century
Rychnov Castle (German Reichenau an der Knieschna) is located in the town of Rychnov nad Kněžnou in the Czech Republic.
After the lordship of Reichenau an der Knieschna was acquired in 1640 by the counts Libštejnský of Kolowrat, Karl Libštejnský of Kolowrat built the Baroque castle in 1676–1690. In the 18th century it was remodelled by the architect Johann Blasius Santini-Aichl.
After the extinction of the Libštejn line of the Kolowrats, the Kolowrats of Krakovec Castle inherited the Rychnov nad Kněžnou estate. During the Second World War it came under German forced administration and in 1948 Count Otmar Kolowrat was expropriated. In 1992 Count Kryštof Jaroslav Kolowrat Krakowský received back the property, which besides the castle and its collections comprises about 5,000 ha of forest and 875 ha of farmland and fish ponds.
Parts of the castle today serve as a picture gallery. Family portraits and European painting of the 17th and 18th centuries are shown. It also contains a library with a collection of manuscripts.
