The Zichy hunting castle in Gheghie was raised by a count of the Hungarian noble family Zichy. The next owner was an entrepreneur from Wallachia, the boyar Mateescu. After his death the castle in Bihor was nationalised by the communist regime, and the building remained derelict for a time, the chestnut park around it becoming unusable. Since 1956 the castle has functioned as a sanatorium for tuberculosis patients. At present the restitution claim of the descendants of the last owner is being resolved.
