Castle Keukenhof in the South Holland town of Lisse was originally built in 1642 as a classicist country house by Adriaen Maertensz. Block, a former commander of the VOC in the Moluccas. It is not clear whether he also lived in it. Later owners included the anatomist Prof. Willem Röell and the art connoisseur Johan Steengracht van Oostcapelle, who saved the castle from ruin in 1809.
