Castle of San Francisco
🇪🇸 Spain · 17th century
The Castle of San Francisco (also called the Castillo del Rey or of the Paso Angosto), situated in the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain), is a 17th-century defensive fortress located on the hill of the same name, in the municipality of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Its construction began in 1601 and, although it can be regarded as finished in 1625, it was later remodelled in different periods. It is a defensive construction of irregular plan, adapted to the relief of the terrain. It occupied an area of 5,750 square metres, which would make it the largest defensive platform on the island, according to the Register of Assets of Cultural Interest of the Canary Islands.
The Castle of San Francisco, integrated into the city's defensive system, was connected with the Castillo de Mata by the northern wall, and with the Punta de Diamante platform to the south by another defensive wall.
