Dąbrówno Castle
🇵🇱 Poland · 14th century
Dąbrówno Castle – a castle situated in the settlement of Dąbrówno in Warmian-Masurian Voivodeship, on the isthmus between the lakes Dąbrowa Wielka and Dąbrowa Mała, on ulica Zamkowa. Now preserved in the form of a ruin.
The castle was built on a regular plan by the Teutonic Order at the beginning of the 14th century; the northern wing arose first. After the town was chartered it was incorporated into the system of town fortifications and was the seat of an Order vogt. Captured and burned in 1410 by Polish and Lithuanian troops during the Great War with the Teutonic Order, it was not rebuilt until the beginning of the 16th century. In the 16th and 17th centuries it was in the hands of the Oleśnicki family from Greater Poland. In 1683–1696 the Finckenstein family extended it by adding two wings, thanks to which it became a Baroque residence surrounded by a park (the original northern wing, and the added eastern and southern ones). At the beginning of the 20th century it became the property of the Strauss family; it was burned in 1945 by Soviet troops. The outer walls and cellars have survived.
