Fort Tucapel

Fort Tucapel, San Diego de Tucapel or San Ambrosio de Tucapel was a fort located in the present-day commune of Cañete, in Chile.

Founded by Pedro de Valdivia in the spring of 1553 and destroyed by Lautaro's forces in December of the same year, in the so-called Battle of Tucapel. It was rebuilt by García Hurtado de Mendoza at the end of December 1557. Equipped with two pieces of artillery, it served as a refuge for the first inhabitants of the city of Cañete de la Frontera, founded in the year 1558.

Since 1963 it has been listed as a National Monument of Chile, in the category of Historical Monument.
