It was declared a national monument in the category "Historic Monument", by virtue of Supreme Decree 3869 of 14 June 1950.

Its construction sought to secure the southern frontier of the Viceroyalty of Peru. This was necessary because of the constant maritime expeditions of pirates and enemy colonial powers. Together with the fortifications of Mancera, Corral and Amargos, the castle formed part of a defensive system with crossfire over the estuary of the Valdivia river. This system made it impossible for enemy fleets to advance into the interior of Chilean territory and to the city's port.

The properties of this material facilitated the excavation of the ground on which the fortification was placed, providing great resistance to artillery impacts and coastal damp.

After the independence of Chile in 1820 and the consequent loss of its military function, the castle was abandoned until the mid-20th century.
