Palazzo Senatorio

Palazzo Senatorio is the seat of the municipality of Rome.

Built from the first half of the 12th century, it has served the municipal function without interruption since 1144, the longest of any town hall still in use.

It rises on the ruins of the Tabularium and of the Temple of Veiovis, and in the 16th century it was remodelled under the supervision of Michelangelo and, after him, of Giacomo Della Porta.

It stands on the Piazza del Campidoglio next to the Palazzo dei Conservatori and the Palazzo Nuovo, which form the complex of the Capitoline Museums.

Until the return of Rome to Italy in 1870 it was the seat of the Senator of Rome, from which it takes its name.
