Description

The Palace of Queen Darejan (Georgian: დარეჯან დედოფლის სასახლე), or Sachino (Georgian: საჩინო), in the old town of the Georgian capital Tbilisi, was built in 1776 for Darejan, wife of King Erekle II, and still bears her name today. It was partly rebuilt in the 19th century. The palace complex comprises living quarters, various storage annexes, and a royal court church. It was built on the ruins of an old castle, whose towers, pillars and walls are made of cobblestone and square (so-called Georgian) bricks. The round wooden balcony crowns the likewise round tower. After the Sovietisation of Georgia, the palace was repeatedly used spontaneously for residential purposes, causing the complex to be rebuilt several times.

Its residents left the palace from the 1970s onward. In the course of restoration work, the monument was freed of later disfigurements and returned to its original appearance. A convent is currently located within the palace complex.
