Description

The more than five-hundred-year-old Panker estate lies in Panker in the Plön district near Lütjenburg in Schleswig-Holstein. From the late Middle Ages the estate belonged to the Rantzau family; in 1739 it was bought by Countess Hedvig Ulrica Taube with money from Landgrave Frederick of Hesse, who was also King of Sweden, to provide for his Swedish mistress and his illegitimate sons. This estate and the neighbouring estates of Klamp, Hohenfelde and Schmoel were bequeathed in 1808 to (titular) Landgrave Carl of Hesse-Kassel. The estate, with its lands and buildings, today belongs to the Hessian House Foundation.

The manor house, often also called a palace, is owned by the House of Hesse. The surrounding estate grounds are developed for tourism and, with several inns, galleries, and resident craftsmen, are an excursion destination in the region of Holstein Switzerland.
