Strakonice Castle
🇨🇿 Czech Republic · 13th century
Strakonice Castle (German Strakonitz) lies in the town of Strakonice in southern Bohemia, Czech Republic.
The Bavors of Strakonitz built the castle in the 13th century. The Romanesque complex housed a noble castle and a commandry of the Knights Hospitaller. In 1402 it came fully into the possession of the Order of St John. In the 15th century the order's main convent was moved from Prague to Strakonice and the complex was extensively rebuilt. In the 16th century further alterations in the Renaissance style followed. Striking is the distinctive form of the corner or spur tower laid out in a teardrop-shaped ground plan.
The castle, which is open to visitors, houses the Museum of the Central Otava Region.
