Węgorzewo Castle is the oldest monument of Węgorzewo.

The complex consists of three two-storey wings of differing length. The castle has an irregular plan, close to a quadrilateral, adapted to its position on a river island. The two main wings, the north-eastern (72 m) and the north-western (62 m), form a slightly converging arrangement, meeting at a small angle. From the north-western wing a short, oblique annex extends eastwards. The remaining sides were originally closed by a perimeter wall. The present shape of the castle complex is probably based on the medieval outline of the castle as a whole, including the curtain walls.

The structure is largely preserved, but successive rebuildings, damage and subsequent reconstructions have changed its original character. As a result of numerous rebuildings and plastering it has lost much of its original stylistic features. Despite the lack of decoration, it remains an example of a late, austere building of the Order. The irregularity of the plan, resulting from its position on an island, softens the geometrical heaviness of form characteristic of late Teutonic castles.
