In the interior of Naxos, 12 km from the island's main town, the Bazeos Tower, formerly the monastery of the Holy Cross, dominates the plain of Agiassos. It is built at the foot of the mountain Profitis Ilias near the ruins of an older monastery, that of Kaloritsa (9th c.), and about one kilometre from the village of Sangri on Naxos. Because of its imposing form and its position at a key point on the road linking the town of Naxos (Chora) with Chalki on Naxos and the beach of Agiassos, the tower is among the most recognisable post-Byzantine monuments of the island and is particularly popular for the cultural events hosted in its spaces every summer.
