Beuggen Castle
🇩🇪 Germany
Beuggen Castle, also called Buchem (1215), Buchein (1253), Bivcheim (1253), Büken (1266), Beukheim or Beuken, is a former moated castle situated 20 kilometres east of Basel on the Baden-Württemberg bank of the Rhine, within the territory of the town of Rheinfelden (Baden) in the district of Lörrach. For 560 years the complex served as a seat of the Teutonic Order in the bailiwick of Swabia-Alsace-Burgundy; it is the oldest surviving commandery of this order of knights. After the dissolution of the Teutonic Order commandery in 1806, the castle was used for two years as a military hospital during the Wars of Liberation against Napoleon Bonaparte.
According to one theory, Kaspar Hauser, whose identity has not been clarified to this day, lived in the castle for a year and a half between 1815 and 1816. From 1820 until 1980 it was a children's home. Until the end of 2016, Beuggen Castle served as a conference and meeting centre of the Protestant Regional Church in Baden and as a venue for various events.
