Castelo de Doiras
🇪🇸 Spain · 15th century
Castelo de Doiras (in Galician: castelo de Doiras) is a medieval fortification located in the parish of Vilarello in the Lugo municipality of Cervantes, Galicia, Spain. It stands on a hill on the bank of the river Cancelada. Ángel del Castillo López dated it to the second half of the 15th century, built to defend the entry into Galicia of the Camino de Santiago, over the ancient Roman road XIX which linked Astorga with Lugo, as Antonio Rodríguez Colmenero noted. Its promoter is said to have been Don Diego Pérez-Osorio y Guzmán, 1st Lord of Cervantes and of Villacid. The House of Osorio originates in León and descends from Count Osorio Martínez, who fell at the Battle of Lobregal.
Rectangular in plan, this building has been considered since 1994 an Asset of Cultural Interest within the catalogue of monuments of the historical heritage of Spain. It stands at somewhat more than 750 m above sea level. Its holder was the Count of Grajal de Campos, who until 1909 also held the title of Lord of Cervantes. It is also known as Castelo da Ferrería, since it is very close to the Ferrería de Fonquente. It has a solitary keep and its walls, 8 m high, reach 16 m at its crenellated tower. In the 1940s it was bought by the lawyer Emilio Martínez Baladrón. It is currently the property of the Fundación Xosé Soto de Fión.
