Gord Zamok in Staryi Chortoryisk
🇺🇦 Ukraine · 10th century
The Chortoryisk detinets is the citadel of the Old Rus' town of Chortoryisk in Volhynia (now the village of Staryi Chortoryisk), first mentioned in the chronicle under the year 1100. It stood on a promontory rising above the old channel of the Styr river on its left bank. Of the fortified part of Chortoryisk, a roughly circular hill fort 110 m in diameter survives today. The platform is surrounded by a rampart 5 m high, absent only on the south-eastern side facing the river. On the western and northern sides the citadel was protected by a ditch and a ravine.
Judging by the archaeological material, the fortifications at Chortoryisk were erected at the end of the 11th century. In the north-western part of the hill fort, near the rampart, a round brick tower 13.6 m in diameter was built in 1291–1292; it is assigned to the towers of the Volhynian type and in its parameters closely resembled the surviving Kamianets tower. It made it possible to cover with fire the most dangerous landward section of the fortress. The cultural layer, more than a metre deep, is saturated with fragments of Old Rus' (12th–13th century) and later (14th–15th century) pottery.
The ancient hill fort in Staryi Chortoryisk is today archaeological monument No. 220.
