The Pingyao City Wall is located in Pingyao county in the centre of Shanxi province and is one of the four best-preserved ancient city walls in China, the other three being the Xi'an city wall in Shaanxi, the Jingzhou city wall in Hubei and the Xingcheng city wall in Liaoning. In 1988 the Pingyao city wall was announced by the State Council of the People's Republic of China as one of the third batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level. In 1997 the ancient city of Pingyao, including the Pingyao city wall, was inscribed on the World Heritage List.
