Rila Fortress is the former fortified core of Rylsk. The town consisted of a citadel and a posad divided into two parts (the Upper and Lower posads). The citadel of Rylsk occupied a riverside outlier at the confluence of the Dublyanka stream with the Seym (the tract known as the Hill of John of Rila).
