San Jeronimo Castle, or the fort of San Jerónimo de Portobelo, formed part of the defence system of the Spanish Crown's transatlantic trade and is an example of 17th- and 18th-century military architecture. By Law 61 of 1908, funds were allocated to the conservation of the castle. By Law 68 of 1941, the castle and the historic ruins of the district of Portobelo were declared a national historic monument.
