Big Fort of Zegrze Fortress

The Big Fort of Zegrze Fortress (Polish: Umocnienie Duże Twierdzy Zegrze) is one of two forts near Zegrze – on the northern bank of the Narew, which formerly flowed here and is today part of the Zegrze Reservoir. The fort was built from 1892 to 1895 by the Russian occupying power as part of the Greater Warsaw fortress system and secured the region to the north, together with the associated Small Fort to the east. Modernised while still before the First World War, the complex was among the most innovative forts in the Russian Empire. Although overgrown, it is well preserved to this day. Subordinate connecting forts were the considerably smaller works at Dębe (to the west) and Beniaminów (to the south-east).
