Castle of Navarrés
🇪🇸 Spain
The Castle of Navarrés, in the province of Valencia, Spain, is a fortress of Muslim origin of small dimensions, located on a low hill near the town.
It has been a Muslim settlement since the first days of Islamic rule; it was conquered by James I in 1244, during his siege of Xàtiva.
Its first owners were the Lauria family, from 1297, passing later, in 1367, to Pascual Maçana; in 1387 it was bought by Jaume Castellá. In 1448 authorisation was granted to settle the place of Navarrés, forming the "BARONY OF NAVARRÉS", together with other settlements, belonging to the Tolsá family.
Subsequently, in 1557 King Philip II granted Don Pedro Luis Galcerán de Borja the title of the "MARQUISATE OF NAVARRÉS".
After the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1609, which in this area caused violent revolts, it was left practically depopulated.
The castle has a morphology similar to the fortresses of this part of the river Xúquer: small dimensions and situated on a rocky spur dominating the riverbed, adapting to the relief of the summit.
Few remains of it survive today, notably small stretches of wall and two of its sturdy cube-shaped towers.
