Mylopotamos Castle
🇬🇷 Greece · 16th century
Mylopotamos Castle, locally known as the Castle of Kato Chora Mylopotamou, is thought to have been built at the beginning of the 16th century as a small-scale fortress in which the inhabitants of the village could take shelter in the event of an attack from the sea, but especially for observing activity in the sea on the western side of Kythira. After 1545 it is recorded that 80 refugee families from Cyprus and Crete lived there, who also provided the soldiers necessary for its guarding; St John the Theologian, the Holy Anargyroi, St Nicholas, All Saints, St John the Forerunner and St Demetrios. Above the gate of the fort there survives a relief with the symbol of Venetian rule, the winged lion of St Mark, with the inscription "PAX TIBI MARCE EVANGELISTA MEUS MDLXV (1565)" ("Peace to you, Mark, my Evangelist"). The site was inhabited until the 1950s, while burials took place there until the end of Venetian rule.
