Ruin
Castle of Jorcas
🇪🇸 Spain · 13th century
The Castle of Jorcas is a ruined castle located on a hill in the Teruel town of Jorcas (Spain), declared a Bien de Interés Cultural as an archaeological zone in 2006. Of the castle, which predates the 13th century, there remain only the remains of a masonry wall and the base of a tower of pentagonal plan of the same material, but with its corners reinforced with ashlars. It is a building included in the inventory of the Cultural Park of the Chopo Cabecero del Alto Alfambra that requires special protection for its singularity.
On the site where the remains of the building stand, a water tank was built at the end of the 20th century.
In 1214 it was ceded to Sancho VII of Navarre. In 1285 it belonged to the bishopric of Zaragoza. In the 16th century its bishop, Fadrique de Portugal, ordered it to be remodelled.
