Qasr al-Gibb

Qasr al-Gibb, or Ain al-Gibb, is an ancient Roman fort located at the far north of the depression of the Kharga oasis centre in the Western Desert. It lies about 45 km north of the city of Kharga. It is the largest Roman fort in the oasis; Qasr al-Gibb was built on a high hill only about 2 km from Qasr al-Sumaira and is an exact copy of the fort of al-Gibb, which can be seen from the main road.

The fort contained many narrow rooms close together, and the remains of six vaulted rooms for the garrison still exist along the eastern and western sides of the courtyard. Beneath the fort there is also a system of water channels, part of a highly developed and complex hydraulic system connected to the oasis.

It is believed that the two forts of al-Sumaira and al-Gibb were most probably built together in the fifth century AD as part of the chain of Roman forts erected in the Western Desert, and the Turkish army reused them during the Ottoman period.
