Bårby borg

Bårby borg is a hill fort in southern Öland.

Bårby borg lies just south of the village of Bårby in Mörbylånga parish. It is the only one of the island's hill forts that makes use of a natural cliff face. The fort consists of a semicircular stone rampart that runs up to the edge of the landborg. The fort's diameter is 150 metres.

The fort's inner area has been under cultivation. Finds show that the fort was built upon during two periods, partly during the Migration Period and later during the Middle Ages, like two of Öland's other hill forts, Eketorp and Gråborg.

The fort's purpose was among other things the defence of Öland against pirates from the Baltic region. It was in use until the 17th century.

During excavations objects such as dress brooches, knives, combs and clay vessels were found. Notable is the find of a gold coin struck for the Byzantine emperor Justin I, who reigned between 518 and 527.
