The Fortress of Vardari, also known as Top-Hane (tower of the Artillery Depot) or Tabak-Hane (tower of the Tanneries), on account of the tanneries that were established in its area, stands in the western part of the walls of Thessaloniki, at the present-day Law Courts. According to information from the traveller Evliya Çelebi, the Fortress of Vardari was built in the winter of 1546 by sultan Suleiman I the Magnificent during a short stay of his in Thessaloniki, and it may be the work of the architect Mimar Sinan.
