Fortress
Fort Tscha-M
🇵🇱 Poland
Fort Tscha-M of Warsaw Fortress (also called Fort "Rakowiec") was one of the smaller forts of the inner fort ring of Warsaw and served to control the road to Kraków. The former fort is located south-west of the Warsaw old town.
The original Russian designation was Щ-M. In Polish it is also referred to merely as a defensive point ("Punkt oporu"). The designation Tscha-M (the adjoining fort Tscha lay to the west, fort M to the east) indicates that it was one of three works subsequently inserted into the existing defensive line. The designations of the Warsaw forts used on German military maps are derived from the German transcription of the Russian letters. In this, Tscha (the transcription of Щ is shch) was distinguished from Tsche (Ч, ch) only by the appended vowel. In Polish the fort was named after the nearby locality of Rakowiec, later incorporated into Warsaw. The streets Władysława Korotyńskiego, Waclawa Sierpinskiego and Szczepan Grzeszczyka surround the park grounds.
